The Chargers added experienced depth to their defensive line on Monday when they acquired defensive lineman Travis Johnson from the Texans in exchange for an undisclosed 2010 draft choice.
San Diego also signed LSU wide receiver Demetrius Byrd, the team's seventh-round choice this year, to a four-year contract. He continues to make progress in his recovery from an automobile accident suffered prior to the draft.
In addition, the team waived wide receiver Greg Carr, tackle Dan Gay and wide receiver Rodgeriqus Smith. All three players joined the Chargers as undrafted free agents in May.

Patriots Make Deal With Oakland For Derrick Burgess
The New England Patriots acquired DE Derrick Burgess in a trade with Oakland for undisclosed draft considerations today. Additionally, the Patriots released OL Al Johnson today.
Burgess, 6-2, 260 pounds, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles (2001-2004) and the Oakland Raiders (2005-2008). Burgess originally joined the NFL as a third-round draft pick by Philadelphia (63rd overall) out of Mississippi in 2001. He has accumulated 227 total tackles, 47 sacks during his career.
